Nautilus mobs cannot be tamed in standard Minecraft versions prior to recent updates, as they are passive aquatic creatures known primarily for dropping nautilus shells used in crafting conduits. However, in the latest Minecraft snapshots and drops like "Mounts of Mayhem" (around late 2025), a new tamable Nautilus mob has been introduced as an underwater mount.
Taming Steps
Approach a wild Nautilus calmly in ocean biomes, then feed it pufferfish (obtained via fishing with an 11.1% chance or from guardians) by right- clicking. Multiple pufferfish may be needed until red hearts appear, signaling successful taming; this works on both regular and zombie Nautiluses. Once tamed, the Nautilus follows the player and can be saddled for riding, granting the "Breath of the Nautilus" effect to pause oxygen depletion underwater.
Additional Uses
Tamed Nautiluses can be bred by feeding two any type of fish, producing a baby that grows after eating 10 fish and auto-tames to the player. They remain aquatic and cannot leave water, making them ideal for ocean bases or exploration. Saddles enable control while riding, enhancing underwater mobility.
