To tell if a propane tank is empty, there are several simple and effective methods:
- Warm Water Test: Pour warm water down the side of the tank. Feel with your hand; the tank will feel cool where propane is present and warm where it is empty. This helps locate the propane level but is not precise for exact amounts.
- Weighing the Tank: Check the tare weight (empty tank weight) stamped on the tank. Weigh the tank and subtract the tare weight. The difference is the propane left.
- Use a Gauge: Some tanks have gauges or you can install an external one to show the propane level.
- Look for Signs: If the tank feels light, the appliances sputter or don't work properly, or the tank fails the warm water test, it is likely low or empty.
- Check a Bulk Tank Gauge or Telemetry: Bulk tanks usually have built-in gauges or telemetry systems to monitor levels.
These methods are practical for both portable tanks (like barbeque tanks) and bulk propane tanks used in homes.
