To turn off your active status on Facebook so that friends and contacts won't see when you're online, follow these steps based on your device:
On the Facebook Mobile App
- Open the Facebook app.
- Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) — top-right on Android, bottom-right on iPhone.
- Tap Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
- Scroll to the Privacy section and tap Active Status.
- Toggle off Show when you're active.
- Confirm by tapping Turn Off in the pop-up.
On the Facebook Website (Browser)
- Log in to Facebook.
- Click the Messenger icon (top-right).
- Click the three-dot icon at the top of the Messenger drop-down.
- Select Turn off Active Status.
- Choose whether to turn off active status for all contacts, all except some, or only some contacts.
- Click OK to confirm.
On the Facebook Messenger Mobile App
- Open the Messenger app.
- Tap your profile picture (top-left).
- Tap Active Status.
- Toggle off Show when you're active.
- Confirm by tapping Turn Off.
Turning off active status will make you appear offline even when you are online, and you can customize this setting for specific people if desired
. This disables the green dot and "active now" indicators so others won't see when you're active on Facebook or Messenger
