To upgrade the cargo hold in Starfield and increase your ship's cargo capacity, follow these steps:
- Find a Ship Technician : Visit a ship services technician at any major landing zone or spaceport. For example, one of the easiest to find is at the landing pad in New Atlantis
- Access Ship Customization : Talk to the Ship Technician and select the option to view and modify your ships. This opens the ship customization screen
- Enter Ship Builder Mode : In the customization screen, press the button (usually X on Xbox or PC) to open the Ship Builder mode. This mode lets you add or remove ship parts freely
- Add Cargo Modules : In Ship Builder, navigate to the cargo section (you can cycle through categories until you find "cargo"). Here, you can add additional cargo hold modules to your ship. These come in two main types:
- Regular cargo modules: Higher storage capacity and cheaper.
- Shielded cargo modules: Lower capacity but help avoid detection of contraband items
- Place Cargo Modules : Attach the cargo modules to available slots on your ship where the placement indicator turns green. You can add multiple cargo modules to increase total cargo space, but keep in mind that adding many modules increases the ship's mass, which can affect jump distance, speed, and maneuverability
- Save and Initialize : After placing the modules, save the changes and exit the builder. Your ship will now have increased cargo capacity
Additionally, upgrading the Payloads skill in the Tech skill tree can also increase cargo space, complementing the physical upgrades
. This process allows you to haul more items without being over-encumbered, making exploration and trading more efficient in Starfield
