To use a fire extinguisher properly, remember the acronym PASS :
- P - Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher.
- A - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames.
- S - Squeeze the handle or lever to release the extinguishing agent.
- S - Sweep the nozzle side to side across the base of the fire until it is completely out.
Start from a safe distance and move closer as the fire diminishes. Keep watching the area after to make sure the fire does not reignite. Only attempt to use a fire extinguisher if the fire is small and safe to tackle; otherwise, evacuate immediately and call emergency services.
