If a carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher is used in a confined space, there is a serious risk of asphyxiation. This occurs because the CO2 discharged displaces oxygen in the air, reducing the available oxygen to breathe. The rapid accumulation of carbon dioxide in the confined space creates a hazardous, oxygen-deficient environment that can lead to suffocation. Additionally, the intense cold of the discharged CO2 can cause frostbite if there is direct skin contact. Using CO2 extinguishers in confined spaces should therefore be done with caution and proper ventilation, or ideally avoided due to these risks.
