In 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle famously misspelled the word "potato." During a visit to an elementary school in Trenton, New Jersey, he incorrectly urged a student to add an "e" at the end of "potato," spelling it as "potatoe." This moment became widely ridiculed and is one of the most remembered political gaffes of that time. Quayle later explained that he was relying on a flash card provided by the school which had the word spelled incorrectly.
