Photosynthesis occurs in the organelle called the chloroplast within plant cells and algae. The chloroplast contains the pigment chlorophyll, which captures light energy to drive the photosynthesis process. Within the chloroplast, photosynthesis specifically takes place in the thylakoid membranes, where light-dependent reactions occur, and in the stroma, where light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle) happen.
