India's first horse racing ground was established in Guindy, Madras (now Chennai) in 1777. This racecourse is controlled by the Madras Race Club, which is considered the oldest horse racing club in South Asia, founded in 1837. The famous Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai, often associated with horse racing in India, was built later in 1883, but it is not the first racecourse in the country.
