Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands (Dutch). It was known as the Dutch East Indies during the colonial period, with the Dutch controlling the territory mostly comprising modern Indonesia. Dutch colonial rule officially ended after Indonesia declared independence on August 17, 1945, followed by formal peace with the Netherlands in 1949. The Dutch East Indies grew from the trading posts of the Dutch East India Company and expanded during the 19th and early 20th centuries to become a unified colonial territory under Dutch rule.
