Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was fatally stabbed on August 22, 2025, while riding a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. She had fled Ukraine’s war and was seeking safety and a new life in the United States. On that night, Zarutska boarded the train after work and sat in front of Decarlos Brown Jr., who suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed her multiple times, including once in the neck. She succumbed to her injuries on the train despite bystanders rushing to help. Brown was arrested immediately after exiting the train and charged with first-degree murder. Authorities have also filed federal charges related to the attack on mass transit, and the death penalty is being considered for Brown.
Zarutska was known for her hardworking nature and quickly built strong ties in her new community. Her tragic death drew international attention, raising serious discussions about public safety, crime policy, and mental health system gaps in the U.S..
