The IS-4 (also known as Object 701) is a Soviet heavy tank that was developed starting in 1943 and began production in 1946. It was designed as a successor to the IS-2 and later the IS-3 tanks, featuring a longer hull, increased armor, and a 122 mm main gun. However, fewer than 250 were produced because it was found to be overweight and had sluggish mobility. The original purpose of fighting the Germans was no longer needed after World War II. Most IS-4 tanks were eventually stationed in the Russian Far East, with some serving as pillboxes along the Chinese border in the 1960s. A small batch of improved IS-4M tanks was produced in 1951. The IS-4 is noted for strong frontal turret armor, decent all-around hull armor, but slower mobility compared to its contemporaries. It is considered a versatile but ultimately obsolete heavy tank.
