There is no VAR (Video Assistant Referee) for most rounds of the Carabao Cup. VAR is only guaranteed for use in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, and it is also used in the semi-final matches. For the earlier rounds, the use of VAR is at the discretion of the English Football League (EFL) and depends on whether all venues in a round have the necessary VAR technology. Due to the cost and infrastructure requirements, many lower league clubs' stadiums do not have VAR, so it is not used in those matches to maintain fairness across the competition. VAR was introduced in the semi-finals and final and has also trialed in-stadium decision announcements in recent seasons.
