The island Kariyachalli, which is gradually sinking, is part of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park in India. It is one of the 21 uninhabited islands in this marine national park located on the southeastern coast of India between Rameshwaram and Thoothukudi. Kariyachalli Island has lost over 70% of its landmass due to erosion, rising sea levels, and degradation of surrounding coral reefs and seagrass meadows. The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is one of India's four major coral reef ecosystems and is ecologically very sensitive. Efforts are underway by the Tamil Nadu government to restore and protect Kariyachalli Island under the Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources (TNSHORE) initiative.
