Komodo dragons live primarily on several Indonesian islands, including Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Flores Island, Gili Dasami (also called Nusa Kode), and Gili Motang, which are part of the Komodo National Park in Eastern Indonesia. They inhabit dry, open grasslands, savannas, tropical forests, and volcanic terrain at low elevations. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only place in the world where Komodo dragons are found in the wild. They prefer hot, dry places and are usually active during the day but can exhibit some nocturnal behavior. They range widely across their islands from coastal areas to ridge tops, living in burrows and resting places that allow them to conserve body heat and ambush prey.
