Milly Pickles was electrocuted in an accident in September 2017 when she was 20 years old and a university marketing student. An electric current of 750 volts entered her right heel, traveled through her leg and pelvis, and exited from her left big toe. This caused severe internal burns—36% of her body was burnt—including internal burning, and devastating damage to her legs. She was rushed to hospital, underwent 25 surgeries, and had her right leg amputated below the knee, along with losing two toes on the other foot. Miraculously, the current did not pass through her spine or brain, which is why she survived. She spent two and a half months in hospital learning to walk again with a prosthetic leg. The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear, but it was life-changing for her. Since then, Milly has become a positive advocate for disability and para-athletics, even presenting at the Paralympics and running marathons as an amputee athlete.
