Minoxidil and finasteride are topical solutions used to treat hair loss. Here are the side effects, ingredients, and other details for each product:
Minoxidil:
- Side effects: blurred vision or other changes in vision, chest pain, dizziness, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, flushing, headache, lightheadedness, scalp irritation, and unwanted hair growth.
- Ingredients: Minoxidil topical foam or solution is for use on the scalp only. It is important to read the instructions carefully and use the medicine only as directed. Do not use more of it and do not use it more often than your doctor ordered. To do so may increase the chance of it being absorbed through the skin. For the same reason, do not apply minoxidil to other parts of your body. Absorption into the body may affect the heart and blood vessels and cause unwanted effects.
Finasteride:
- Side effects: scalp irritation, headache, dizziness, sexual dysfunction, breast tenderness or enlargement, and allergic reactions.
- Ingredients: Topical finasteride reduces both scalp and plasma DHT levels. It is typically mixed with minoxidil and the finasteride/minoxidil mix is a great combo for combatting hair loss by attacking it from two different angles. Topical finasteride still isn’t covered by insurance so it tends to be slightly more expensive than oral finasteride, but for men who see side effects from oral finasteride, it is worth the extra cost.
It is important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects, and some people may not experience any side effects at all. If you are considering using either of these products, its a good idea to talk to your doctor about the potential risks and benefits, as well as any other medications or supplements you may be taking that could interact with them.
