To level up in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, you need to improve your Major Skills. Each time the combined increase in any of your Major Skills reaches 10 points, your character qualifies for a level-up
How to Level Up
- Improve your Major Skills by using them actively. For example, if Conjuration is a Major Skill, casting conjuration spells will increase that skill and contribute to leveling up
- Once you have increased your Major Skills by a total of 10 points, you will get a notification on screen indicating you can level up
- To actually level up, you must sleep in a bed. Sleeping in a bed you own gives you an extra buff, but any bed will work
- After sleeping, you can increase three of your eight Attributes. If you raised many skills related to certain Attributes, you may get a bonus modifier for those Attributes, making it beneficial to increase those even if you don’t want to immediately
Attributes and Skills
Each Attribute governs certain skills:
Attribute| Skills Governed| Effect
---|---|---
Agility| Marksman, Security, Sneak| Movement balance, fatigue, arrow damage
Endurance| Armorer, Block, Heavy Armor| Fatigue, health, health increase on
level up
Intelligence| Alchemy, Conjuration, Mysticism| Total Magicka and magic use
Personality| Illusion, Mercantile, Speechcraft| NPC likability
Speed| Acrobatics, Athletics, Light Armor| Movement speed
Strength| Blade, Blunt, Hand-to-Hand| Carry capacity, fatigue, melee damage
Willpower| Alteration, Destruction, Restoration| Magicka regen, fatigue
Luck| None| Affects all skills
You can also increase Luck by one point each level, though it is not governed by any skill
Tips for Faster Leveling
- Choose Major Skills that you can easily improve frequently. For example, Athletics (running/swimming), Acrobatics (jumping), or Block (blocking attacks) are good for natural leveling
- Power-leveling can be done by repeatedly performing actions that increase Major Skills, such as running nonstop with Athletics or casting low-cost spells repeatedly
- It is generally better to level skills evenly rather than focusing on just a few to avoid weaknesses
Oblivion Remastered Changes
In Oblivion Remastered, both Major and Minor Skills contribute to leveling, allowing faster progression. You still need to sleep to level up, and upon leveling, you get 12 Attribute points to distribute among at least three Attributes, with a maximum of 5 points per Attribute per level
. In summary, to level up in Oblivion:
- Use your Major Skills actively to increase them.
- When their total increase reaches 10 points, sleep in a bed.
- Allocate Attribute points upon leveling.
- Repeat the process to continue leveling.
Choosing Major Skills that fit your playstyle and are easy to improve will make leveling more efficient
