Old fashioned simple syrup for cocktails is usually just sugar and water, often in a richer ratio (2:1) so it stands up better in spirit‑forward drinks like an Old Fashioned.

Basic rich simple syrup (2:1)

  • Combine 2 parts sugar with 1 part water in a small saucepan (for example, 1 cup sugar and ½ cup water).
  • Heat gently and stir until the sugar is fully dissolved, then remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  • Store in a clean, sealed bottle in the fridge; use within about 1–2 weeks for best quality.

Using it in an Old Fashioned

  • In a rocks glass, add a small amount of this syrup (often around ⅛–¼ oz) and a couple dashes of Angostura bitters, then stir.
  • Add ice and 2–3 oz of bourbon or rye, stir until chilled, then garnish with an orange peel and, if you like, a cocktail cherry.
