On the reality TV show Survivor, contestants do not have traditional bathrooms or toilet facilities. They typically manage their bowel movements in two main ways depending on the setting of the season:
- For inland or jungle seasons, contestants dig a hole in a designated area away from camp to poop and then bury it afterward.
- For island or oceanfront seasons, like the ones usually filmed in Fiji, contestants often do what is called "aqua dumping," which means swimming out into the ocean to poop there. This method is preferred by some as it is less messy and requires no toilet paper.
Contestants are not provided with toilet paper, so they usually improvise with leaves or the ocean water. For privacy and hygiene, there is usually a designated area such as "Coconut Grove" on land for pooping. Women do receive menstrual products and medical supplies as needed, but no formal toilet facilities exist on the show. The handling of bathroom needs is kept primitive to maintain the real survival experience, though boiling water and clean drinking water are provided. Contestants adapt to these conditions as part of the challenge on Survivor.
