Oscar Pistorius is a South African former sprint runner and Paralympic champion who became famously known as the "Blade Runner" due to his use of carbon-fiber prosthetic legs. He was born without fibula bones in both lower legs, which were amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old. Despite his disability, Pistorius achieved remarkable success in athletics, breaking records and winning multiple medals, including at the Paralympic Games. He famously became the first double-leg amputee to compete in the Olympic Games in 2012. However, Pistorius's life took a tragic turn in 2013 when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his home. He claimed it was an accident, believing he was shooting at an intruder. He was initially convicted of culpable homicide but later his conviction was upgraded to murder. He was sentenced to over 13 years in prison but was released on parole in January 2024. His case is highly controversial and remains a significant part of his legacy.
