Oxygen is in Group 16 of the periodic table, which is also known as the oxygen group or chalcogens. This group includes oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and polonium. Each element in this group has six valence electrons and shares similar chemical properties. Oxygen is a nonmetal and the most abundant element in Earth's crust. The group is called chalcogens because many of these elements form ores with metals (oxides, sulfides, etc.).
