Pablo Escobar died on December 2, 1993, during a shootout with Colombian authorities in Medellín. He was shot multiple times—in the leg, upper back, and right ear—with the fatal bullet being the one that struck his head. Escobar was attempting to escape across rooftops when he was killed. Although the official account states he was shot and killed by the Colombian National Police's Search Bloc, some speculation exists that he may have taken his own life to avoid capture. His death ended a long and intense manhunt and marked the collapse of his drug empire.
