Regime refers to a set of rules, whether formal or informal, that determine a countrys politics. In politics, it is the form of government or the set of rules, cultural or social norms, etc. that regulate the operation of a government or institution and its interactions with others. The term "regime" has a negative connotation in modern usage, implying an authoritarian government or dictatorship. However, contemporary academic usage of the term is broader than popular and journalistic usage, meaning "an intermediate stratum between the government and the state". In international relations, the concept of regime is used to name international regulatory agencies.
