Roseanne Barr was fired by ABC in May 2018 because she posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former senior advisor to President Barack Obama. In her tweet, Barr compared Jarrett to the "Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes," which was widely condemned as racist. Despite Barr's later apology and claim that she was tweeting under the influence of Ambien, ABC's entertainment president called the tweet "abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values." As a result, ABC abruptly canceled the reboot of "Roseanne," which had been highly successful and was renewed for another season. The network also removed reruns of the show and moved forward without Barr, launching a spinoff titled "The Conners" without her involvement.
