The song "When I'm with You" is a power ballad by the Canadian rock band Sheriff. It was originally released in January 1983 as the second single from their self-titled debut album. The song gained initial success in Canada, reaching the top ten there, and was a minor hit in the United States at the time, peaking at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. However, the song became a surprising number one hit in the United States in 1989, six years after its original release and after the band Sheriff had already broken up in 1985. This unexpected rise to the top of the charts was sparked when radio stations began playing the song again in late 1988, leading Capitol Records to re-release it as a single. By February 1989, it reached number one in the US, making Sheriff the first Canadian band to have a US number one hit since 1974. The song was written by Arnold Lanni, Sheriff's keyboardist, who wrote it quickly after meeting a girl he fell in love with (Valeri Brown). They later married. The lead singer, Freddy Curci, is noted for holding a vocal note for 19.3 seconds in the song, which is recognized by Guinness World Records. Despite this late success, the band did not reunite to capitalize on the hit. Instead, Curci and guitarist Steve DeMarchi went on to form the band Alias, which also achieved success with a hit in 1990. "When I'm with You" is remembered as a classic rock power ballad and has an interesting history of delayed success, reflecting changing trends in music and a wave of nostalgia for early '80s rock ballads in the late '80s.
