Simple squamous epithelium is a type of simple epithelium composed of a single layer of flat, scale-like cells resting on a basement membrane. The cells are thin and densely packed, allowing for rapid diffusion and filtration of substances. This epithelium provides a smooth, frictionless surface and is found lining blood vessels (endothelium), body cavities (mesothelium), alveoli of the lungs, and parts of the kidney.
