What happened to Sonya Massey?
Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old unarmed Black woman, was fatally shot on July 6, 2024, inside her home near Springfield, Illinois, by Sean Grayson, a white Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy. Massey had called 911 to report a suspected intruder. Body camera footage shows Grayson shouting at her as she moved toward a stove with a pot of hot water, then firing three times; one bullet struck her beneath the left eye and killed her.
The incident, step by step
- Around 12:50 a.m., two deputies responded to Massey’s call about a possible prowler at her residence in Woodside Township, outside Springfield.
- At approximately 1:21 a.m., Grayson discharged his weapon, hitting Massey three times, including a fatal shot to the head.
- An autopsy confirmed the entry wound was beneath her left eye; the bullet exited the back of her neck, fracturing her skull and piercing her carotid artery.
- Massey was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m., about 26 minutes after the shooting.
Aftermath and legal outcome
Grayson was fired from the sheriff’s office and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. In October 2024, a jury convicted him of second-degree murder. On January 29, 2026, he received the maximum 20-year prison sentence for that conviction.
Grayson died in prison on August 23, 2026, after serving roughly six months of his sentence. His attorney said Grayson had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2023; it was not immediately clear whether the cancer caused his death.
Why the case drew national attention
The release of body camera video showing Massey ducking and apologizing seconds before being shot sparked widespread outrage. Her family and supporters emphasized that she had called police for help, not confrontation, and that no intruder was ever identified. The case became a focal point in debates over police use of force, accountability, and the risks Black women face during police encounters.
