To pick up and move items in Starfield, follow these steps:
How to Pick Up Items
- Position your crosshair over the item you want to pick up.
- Hold E on PC or A on Xbox controller while close to the object to pick it up.
- You can release the button once the item is picked up and then move around with it floating in front of you.
- Note that not all items can be moved; for example, loot inside boxes or enemy suits cannot be grabbed
How to Move and Drag Items
- After picking up an item by holding the interact button, you can move it around by walking or using the mouse/thumbstick.
- To drop the item, tap the interact button again (E on PC, A on Xbox)
- You can drag items around without adding them to your inventory by holding the interact button and releasing it while still holding the item in front of you
How to Rotate Items
- While holding an item, rotate it using:
- PC: Left mouse button and right mouse button to rotate left or right.
- Xbox: Left trigger (LT) and right trigger (RT) to rotate.
- To change the axis of rotation:
- PC: Hold the Shift key.
- Xbox: Press the left joystick (press it down).
- Rotation is useful for placing items precisely, especially when decorating your ship or outposts
How to Throw Items
- While holding an item, press and hold R on PC or X on Xbox to throw it.
- The longer you hold the throw button, the farther the item will be thrown.
- Throwing can be used tactically, for example, throwing explosives at enemies
Additional Tips
- You must sheath your weapon before picking up items in some cases (hold R on PC or X on Xbox to sheath)
- Items that are equipable (like weapons or space suits) will be equipped if you hold E, so to move them without equipping, you may need to use specific drag mechanics or avoid holding the button too long
This system allows you to interact with the environment creatively, whether for combat, decorating, or solving puzzles in Starfield
