Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of Smash Mouth, died at age 56 from acute liver failure. His death occurred at his home in Boise, Idaho, where he was in hospice care and surrounded by family and friends. Harwell had a long history of health problems related to alcohol abuse, which contributed to his liver failure. He was also diagnosed in 2013 with cardiomyopathy (a heart condition) and Wernicke encephalopathy (a neurological condition), both linked to his chronic alcohol use. These conditions, along with his ongoing addiction struggles, ultimately led to his decline and death from late-stage liver failure.
