Sugar is an example from the group of chemicals called carbohydrates. Chemically, sugars consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms and are classified as carbohydrates. Sugars are primarily divided into monosaccharides (simple sugars, e.g., glucose, fructose) and disaccharides (double sugars, e.g., sucrose, which is common table sugar). Monosaccharides are the building blocks of disaccharides and polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates). Sucrose, the typical sugar used in households, is a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose units.
