The greenhouse effect occurs in the Earth's atmosphere. It happens when heat- trapping gases in the atmosphere prevent heat from escaping into space, thereby warming the Earth's surface. These gases absorb the longwave radiation emitted by the Earth's surface after it is heated by sunlight, effectively trapping heat near the surface and raising the temperature.
