United Airlines Flight 93 was one of four commercial airliners hijacked by al- Qaeda terrorists during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The flight was scheduled from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California. Around 46 minutes into the flight, hijackers took control of the plane after killing one passenger and storming the cockpit. Passengers and crew learned about the other attacks and attempted to retake the plane. Their efforts caused the hijackers to crash the plane into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all 44 people on board but preventing the attackers from reaching their intended target, likely a significant landmark in Washington, D.C., such as the White House or the Capitol. This heroic act is commemorated by the Flight 93 National Memorial.
