Waimataruru House is a stunning, award-winning architectural home located near Otama Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Designed by Pac Studio and interior designed by Kristina Pickford, it is a timber-framed, low-carbon, off-grid home embodying a deep connection with the surrounding natural landscape. The house cascades down a steep, hilly terrain following the natural slope of the site, with primary spaces positioned to capture specific, framed views of the ocean, forest gullies, rocky outcrops, and streams. The design emphasizes a seamless indoor-outdoor relationship, using natural materials like charred and weathered timber, waxed steel, lime plaster walls enriched with beach sand, and a red oxide wall centerpiece. It has an environmentally responsive layout, including 26 photovoltaic panels with Tesla Powerwall support, rainwater harvesting, and a Biolytix waste system. The overall architectural concept focuses on blending into the landscape, sustainability, and framing nature's beauty throughout the home.
