The three Confederate states that were effectively cut off from the rest of the Confederacy during the American Civil War were:
- Missouri
- Kentucky
- West Virginia (which separated from Virginia and joined the Union in 1863)
Missouri and Kentucky were border states with divided loyalties and never fully controlled by the Confederacy, with much of their territory remaining under Union control. West Virginia was formed from counties of Virginia that rejected secession and became a separate state loyal to the Union, effectively cutting it off from Confederate Virginia
. Additionally, East Tennessee, part of Tennessee, had strong pro-Union sentiment and attempted to secede from the Confederacy, but was suppressed by Confederate authorities
. Thus, Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia were the Confederate states or parts of states that were geographically or politically isolated from the main Confederate territory.
