Shrek has a Scottish accent. The characters voice actor, Mike Myers, suggested the accent as he felt it would add character background, historical depth, and individuality to the film franchise. Myers, who is of Scottish heritage, also noted that the Scottish accent is a "working people accent," which he felt was fitting for Shrek, who he believed was raised working class. The DreamWorks bosses initially liked the Canadian accent that Myers used when recording Shreks lines, but Myers insisted on re-recording everything in a Scottish dialect. The change was eventually made after executive producer Steven Spielberg agreed to let Myers try it, and the result was well-received.
