On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, carried out a massacre that left 15 people dead, including themselves. The two perpetrators entered the school with semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and several explosives, killing 12 fellow students and a teacher and wounding 21 others in less than 20 minutes. They subsequently committed suicide in the school library, where ten of the twelve students killed were located. Throughout the massacre in the library, they ordered everybody to get up, shouted things like "Woo!" after shooting, and seemed to be enjoying themselves. The shootings were followed by a national debate on how to end gun violence in schools, and a growing number of schools throughout the country invested in private security forces and metal detectors. The Columbine massacre has also inspired over 80 copycat attacks, and its impact continues to grow.
