Gymnasts typically retire at a young age due to the intense physical and time commitments that elite competition demands. Most gymnasts start their careers in their teens and retire in their early twenties. Currently, per the 1997 regulation, gymnasts must be at least 16 years of age, or turning 16 within the calendar year, to compete in senior-level events. However, there is no maximum age restriction, and some gymnasts compete well into their 20s and beyond. Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan competed in the Tokyo Olympics this year at age 46, which was her eighth appearance. While younger gymnasts are winning awards and trophies, older gymnasts are also capable of competing at high levels.
