The ancient civilization that went to war with Troy was the Greeks, specifically the Achaeans. The Trojan War, as described in Greek mythology and epic poetry such as Homer's Iliad, was fought between the Trojans and the Greeks. The conflict started after Paris of Troy took Helen, the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta, leading the Greeks to wage war on the city of Troy to retrieve her. This war, dated to around the 12th or 13th century BC, lasted about ten years and ended with the Greeks sacking the city of Troy using the famous stratagem of the Trojan Horse.
