Timon, the beloved character from "The Lion King," is a meerkat, a small mammal belonging to the mongoose family native to the drier regions of southern Africa, particularly the Kalahari Desert. Meerkats are highly social animals, living in large groups called mobs or clans, consisting of around 20 to 50 individuals and are led by a dominant male and female. Timon is a fictional character created by Disney for "The Lion King," but his design and behavior are inspired by real-life meerkats found in Africa. In the film, Timon is portrayed as the wise-cracking sidekick of Pumbaa, a warthog. Meerkats are communal animals who often look out for one another.
