Bowling pins are the targets of the bowling ball in various bowling games including tenpins, five-pins, duckpins, and candlepins. Historically, bowling pins were made out of solid pieces of maple wood. Nowadays, due to the scarcity of suitable wood, bowling pins can be made from approved synthetics. The manufacturing process of wooden bowling pins begins with blocks of wood that are layered together and cut to form a rough outline. It is then sawed to produce the basic shape of the pin. After that, the pin is turned on a lathe to create the final shape. Finally, it is coated with a plastic material, painted, and covered with a glossy finish. According to current regulations, bowling balls must be made out of maple wood harvested from trees grown above the 45th parallel as they have a consistent density and hardness.
