Commitment issues refer to a pattern of ambivalence and lack of consistency in dedicating oneself to a long-term goal, whether its a job, a goal, a city, or a relationship. In the context of romantic relationships, commitment issues often manifest as fear or unwillingness to commit to a long-term relationship, such as an inability to talk about the future or a lack of desire to take the next steps when a relationship begins to progress over time. Commitment issues can stem from various factors, including fears about the relationship, such as fear of being hurt, fear of being with the wrong person, fear of things not working out, and other relationship-related anxieties. Trauma from a past relationship or a difficult breakup can also lead to commitment issues in the future. Some common signs of commitment issues include avoiding making future plans, avoiding talking or thinking about the future of the relationship, lack of emotional attachment, delayed response to calls and texts, flaky or inconsistent behavior, nitpicky about small things, poor communication, and a history of short-term relationships. Therapy is a great place to start examining possible reasons why commitment might pose a challenge for someone.
