High-intensity discharge (HID) headlights are a type of headlight that produces light by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina arc tube. The HID light bulb consists of two electrodes encased in a glass enclosure filled with xenon gas and metal salts. HID headlights are sometimes referred to as xenon lights because of the presence of xenon gas.

However, HID bulbs emit a lot of heat and a large portion of their energy is wasted as heat. Additionally, some drivers may find the bright blue and white-tinted light of HID headlights to be too harsh or distracting.
