Hooded eyes refer to a common facial feature where excess skin folds down from the brow bone to the lash line, which can obscure the eyelid crease and make the eyes look smaller. This trait is usually hereditary, and most people are born with it. However, hooded eyes can also develop or become more pronounced with age, eye rubbing, obesity, sun exposure, and sleep apnea. People with hooded eyes may find that the skin below the eyebrow touches or comes close to their eyelashes, and the drooping skin may cover all or part of the eyelid, leaving a crease. While this does not usually cause medical issues, some people may find it obscures their vision, and it may also affect a person’s quality of life if they find the appearance aesthetically displeasing. Carefully applying makeup can help open up the appearance of the eyes, but if this does not achieve the desired effect, doctors may recommend a procedure called blepharoplasty.
