No-see-ums, also known as biting midges, are small flies that belong to the family Ceratopogonidae. They are generally 1-3 millimeters in length, with adults only about 1/8 inch in length. No-see-ums are known for their small size, which allows them to easily fit through screens on windows, doors, and lanais. They are often found in coastal areas and can be a nuisance due to their painful bites. No-see-ums are weak fliers, so installing screens with mesh smaller than 16-mesh insect wire and using ceiling or other types of fans can help keep them away from areas where humans congregate. Essential oils like lemon, eucalyptus, mint, and camphor are known for repelling no-see-ums.
