An output device is any piece of computer hardware that converts information or data into a human-perceptible form or, historically, into a physical machine-readable form for use with other non-computerized equipment. Output devices allow users to better interact with computer equipment by converting data signals into things that people can better understand. Examples of output devices include:

  • Monitor/Display Screen: A display device is the most common form of output device which presents output visually on a computer screen. The output appears temporarily on the screen and can easily be altered or erased. With all-in-one PCs, notebook computers, handheld PCs, and other devices, the term display screen is used for the display device. The display devices are also used in home entertainment systems, mobile systems, cameras, and video game systems.

  • Printer: A printer is an output device that produces a hard copy of anything shown on the monitor. Monitors and printers are two of the most commonly used output devices used with a computer. Types of printers include dot matrix printers, inkjet printers, and laser printers.

  • Speakers/Headphones: A speaker is an output device that produces sound through an oscillating transducer called a driver. Headphones are also an output device that produces sound but is worn on the ears.

  • Projector: A projector is an output device that projects an image or video onto a surface, such as a wall or screen.

  • Plotter: A plotter is an output device that draws vector graphics onto paper. It is commonly used in engineering and architectural applications.

  • Braille Embosser/Reader: A braille embosser is an output device that prints braille characters onto paper, while a braille reader is an output device that displays braille characters on a refreshable braille display.

  • CD/DVD/Blu-ray Drive: A CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive is an output device that reads data from a disc and plays it back on a computer.

  • Global Positioning System (GPS): A GPS is an output device that provides location and navigation information.

  • Speech-Generating Device (SGD): An SGD is an output device that generates speech for individuals with speech impairments.

  • TV: A TV is an output device that displays video and audio content.

  • 3D Printer: A 3D printer is an output device that creates three-dimensional objects from a digital file.

  • Sound Card: A sound card is an output device that converts digital audio signals into analog signals that can be played through speakers or headphones.
