Schedule 3 drugs are substances that have a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence. They are less dangerous than Schedule I and II drugs and can be obtained through prescription, but generally are not available over the counter. Examples of Schedule III drugs include:

  • Products containing not more than 90 milligrams of codeine per dosage unit (Tylenol with CodeineĀ®)
  • Ketamine
  • Anabolic steroids
  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone)
  • Codeine and hydrocodone products mixed with aspirin or acetaminophen

Using Schedule III drugs puts a person at a lower risk for developing a substance use disorder than Schedule I and II drugs but at a higher risk than Schedule IV and V drugs. Medical providers often prescribe Schedule III drugs for illnesses, injuries, and other health-related reasons.
