Kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that occurs when bacteria or viruses cause problems in one or both kidneys. Symptoms of a kidney infection usually develop quite quickly over a few hours or days and may include:
- Fever
- Chills
- A burning feeling or pain when urinating
- Having to urinate often
- A strong, lasting urge to urinate
- Back, side or groin pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Pus or blood in the urine
- Urine that smells bad or is cloudy
- Belly pain
In older people, a kidney infection may cause confusion, and in children, symptoms may include smelly pee, blood in their pee, wetting the bed, a high temperature, and feeling unwell. If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see a healthcare provider right away. A kidney infection can be serious if not treated with antibiotics or other medicines, and if left untreated, it can cause lasting damage to the kidneys or even lead to life-threatening complications.
