In Formula 1, Pirelli is the current supplier of tires and has been since 2011. The tires used in Formula 1 are built to last less than one race distance. Pirelli provides three different compounds of slick tire, as well as the intermediate and full-wet tire, for teams to utilize over a race weekend. The compounds refer to how hard or soft the rubber is on a particular type of tire. The softer compounds are designed for the slowest circuits with low wear and degradation, while the harder compounds are designed for faster circuits with higher wear and degradation. The tires have undergone major changes throughout the history of Formula One with different sizes and compounds. The current specification of F1 tires is 18-inch tires, which were designed from the ground-up, with every element of the tire drawn from a clean sheet of paper: from the profile to the structure, to the compounds.
