According to the Tanner stages, there are five stages of puberty that most males experience over the course of several years. Here are the five stages of puberty in males:
-
Stage 1: Prepubertal. In this stage, boys haven’t experienced any visible changes.
-
Stage 2: Testicular and scrotal growth. The testicles and skin around the testicles (scrotum) begin to get bigger. Pubic hair starts to grow on the base of the penis.
-
Stage 3: Penile growth and height growth. The penis continues to grow, and height growth will slow down to about 2 to 3 inches per year. Armpit hair starts to grow.
-
Stage 4: Continued growth and development. Testicles, penis, and scrotum continue to get bigger, and the scrotum will get darker in color. Pubic hair gets thicker. A deeper voice becomes permanent, and acne may start to appear.
-
Stage 5: Final phase. Puberty ends in this stage. Reproductive organs and genitals are fully developed. Pubic hair fills out to reach the inner thighs. Hips, thighs, and buttocks fill out in shape.
